Hydrosols

After reading about hydrosols in James Green's Herbal Medicine Making Handbook, I was fascinated, and following his directions I have made a few since then - first, last summer with my niece, and then by myself. The most successful was my arnica flower hydrosol (made with dried arnica, even - turns ...

Re: post menapause bleeding

I would, though, definitely go to the doctor. My sister had postmenopausal bleeding that turned out to be uterine cancer. At the very least it is a good idea to gather information from all quarters you can, then you have a real choice.

Wild Sarsaparilla

What are your favourite uses for this plant? I have a nice dried root that I dug up last summer and shaved into little pieces. The only thing I have done with it is make myself a cup of tea, which was very pleasant, and I understand that it is good for overall health.

What are your experiences?

Re: Flu and Cold Remedies

Elderberry extract is my favorite--I use Kiva Rose's method to make it and it does seem very helpful. This looks HEAVENLY. As well as effective. And I do have an emotional preference for brandy in extracts, though I haven't found much agreement with that. I made dried elderberry syrup once when I w...

Re: Green Household Magic

I think my sweet thyme plant is really at the end of her life - this is her second winter on the sill, and that's usually how long they tend to last in the pot. I'm thinking about doing something with the dry branches (which have a lot of scent)when the time comes, so this conversation about steams ...

Re: Flu and Cold Remedies

As best I can remember - and I don't remember terribly well - the smell when reducing was pretty much like the dried plant, and pretty much like the syrup, faintly sharp but mostly sort of - weedy? not as green as if I'd used the fresh plant. But a little fuller than that. It tastes a lot of honey, ...

Re: What Is A Simple?

Thank you Lady A, that was indeed an excellent article! It also touches on another one of my concerns, i.e. buying commercial preparations. I don't want to speak for anybody else but my instinct as a herbalist is to keep it small and personal. Herbalism can be taken over by mass-think and advertisin...

Re: What Is A Simple?

It made sense to me in a way too, but usually I feel drawn to one herb or another and that's what I go with.
