Just finished my yearly reading of Juliette de Bairacli Levy's book "Common Herbs for Natural Health", which has a couple of interesting tooth powder recipes.
One uses 'vegetable charcoal' powdered fine with a few drops of oil of peppermint, clove or rosemary. Another recipe uses sage leaves and sea salt ground fine together.

I've been working on my teeth (family also) using a Super Calcium Tonic (Horsetail, Oatstraw, Comfrey, Nettle, Lobelia, Honey and ACV), we drink this daily....YUMMY I will be giving Juliette's recipes for tooth powder a try...can't hurt :D

My husband was having similar problem plus was having swelling in his mouth & not being able to taste. He quit using commercial toothpaste & mouthwash now flossing & brushing with water. It's working great, all has cleared up. So far he hasn't needed anything else but if he does I'll recommend rinsing with salt water, baking soda water or a mixture of brandy or vodka & water.

I have been making a mouthwash recipe that works very well:
1/4 cup vodka
3/4 cup distilled water
2 dropper-fulls calendula tincture
2 dropper-fulls myrrh tincture
2 dropper-fulls oregon grape root
3 drops peppermint essential oil
3 drops tea tree essential oil
3 drops oregano essential oil
3 drops GSE

I use approx tsp or more in my waterpik every night when I clean my teeth and same amount in water as a mouthwash as needed

Just made a new tooth paste with rose petal powder, cardamom powder, baking soda and coconut oil. It is great!

I was using the baking soda and coconut oil, and recently read a post by another herbalist (Rosalee de la Foret) who uses rose petal powder alone, so I combined them. It is also very inspiring for me, thinking about all the other herbs that would make great tooth powders: thyme, cinnamon, clove, sage, mints, etc.

:D

Here's the recipe I put together (approximate):

Rose petal powder 2 parts
Baking soda 1 part
Cardamom powder 1 tablespoon (this will vary depending upon your total amount)
Coconut oil enough to make a paste

I made an 8 ounce jar, with a wide mouth lid, and just dip my wet toothbrush in it.

About a year ago I stopped using toothpaste and just brush with water. My mouth has never felt cleaner! Toothpaste would dry my mouth out and leave terrible breath. The 'clean' results wouldn't last as I woke up with nasty breath. My diet has also changed to a cleaner and vegetarian one, so that may have something to do with it. As for liquids, the only things I drink on a regular basis are herbal teas and water. Lately, I'm getting into flossing with plain floss and rinsing with warm salt water. Also, cleaning the tongue with a tongue scraper every night/morning has been instrumental to eliminating bad breath. I used to have terrible breath due to nasal drip and other nasty sinus issues. The tongue scraper saved me.
