Doctrine of Signatures

Postby Judy L » Thu Dec 28, 2006 8:15 pm

Hi,

I am very intrigued by this subject. Most of what I have learned about this has been thru Matthew Wood's writings.

Any suggestions for other sources of info?

Thanks,
Judy

Isla Burgess' book 'Weeds Heal' is a hands on, practice based approach that included getting to know plants via the doctrine of signatures:

Isla is the founding director of Waikato Centre for Herbal Studies in Cambridge, a teaching centre dedicated to training Medicinal Herbalists. Isla believes that the wise use of plants as medicine requires both an intimate connection with the plants as well as a detailed knowledge of current validation for their use. Her book covers fourteen weeds in depth which are analysed in terms of the 'doctrine of signatures', a visual key to their properties where emphasis is placed on smell, taste, feel and the chakra system of colours. Isla gives information on the medical constituents of the plants and on how to make preparations.

I love this book. She not only teaches about the specifc plants in the book, but teaches how to apply the principles to whatever plant you are working with.
It's all good (except for the crappy bits).

Hey Sk,
are these the only people that sell Isla's book. I would love to get my hands on a copy but haven't had much success searching the internet for anywhere else that sells it.

It's mentioned as a reference everywhere yet it is very hard to find outside of NZ.

The blurb mentions that she covers 14 weeds in depth. Does anyone have the book and can let us know which ones those are?????

TIA

biggest thing to know about the doctrine of signatures is that its a realization that is felt, not something that is looked for with the intellect. Otherwise, you'd be saying all yellow things are good for the liver or make you pee, all white things are good for bones, ect ect ect.

When you experience it, you feel it in you like an epiphany; in your heart/solar plexus. Matt's book is a great introduction to the idea, but the best place to study it is in the plants themselves.

I found, when I learned about it, that by suspending judgement about it (either way) and just recognizing it, my personal experience beared out its legitimacy. It made less intellectual sense to deny something I'd seen be accurate than to blow it off because it doesn't make intellectual sense.

While books are good, I sometimes, even often, find that what may be a signature for someone else just isn't for me; I think they speak to us through signatures using the relationship we have with them as the foundation for that language.

Hi Shell,

That sounds like it would be a great swap - is it the new menopausal years?

I have put in an order with Kay at Koanga Gardens, not sure how long that will take.

Yep, it's the New Menopausal Years. PM me with your addy again and I'll let you know my new one. If the value of each book isn't equal I will happily make up the difference and/or pay for postage, just let me know!

Signatures are intensly personal. Like Jim said, they are differnet person to person, to plant. They are the plants way of revealing themselves. It is elusive. If I wanted to understand this doctrine, I would devote my self to a plant, and maybe, if she felt like it, she would reval herself to me.

To me there is something inherently different b/w doctrine and plant spirit medicine. Maybe it is the same but in my eyes it is a different paradigm.

From what Jim and redwing have shared I term that as plant spirit medicine not as working w/ doctrines. If I ingest a plant or even sit w/ a plant then I am working w/ the spirit as it moves thru the plant and merges w/ my own or works thru me.

Esme, I don't have my copy with me, but will have a look when I get home. Off the top of my head the plants weeds like nettle, deadnettle, chickweed, small mallow, puha (sow thistle), cleavers... that's all I remember for now.

I could probably scan some of the text when I get home too.

Shelly, that's cool you and tw have hooked up, as it does seem a hard book to come by. I see a number of US herbalists recommending it (and Isla) so it's strange it's not more available. I think it's self published. Pity Ash Tree Publishing haven't picked it up.

Got an answer from Ash Tree P., they say the don't plan on carrying "Weeds Heal" at the time. Maybe if they receive a few inquiries regarding this book, they'll change their mind. Just a thought...
