does anyone know what this plant is? I tried looking it up in the peterson's field guide but couldn't positively I.D. it.

not sure, it's hard for me to identify plants from pictures sometimes - especially if I haven't wildcrafted them myself - what part of the country is it in? (or what country!)

my first thought was that it might be one of the eupatoriums.

I think it might be Ironweed, or Vernonia fasciculata. Look at some of the pics online - I have never seen this plant in person but I tried my best to identify it based on your picture.
