What are you reading right now?

Postby forestmother » Fri Oct 09, 2009 8:38 pm

I know we keep starting these posts, but I think it's so fun.
I am more than half way through an amazing book called, "The Holy Book of Women's Mysteries" by Z. Budapest. Wow! I just read about the Goddess, Aradia. She was a known as the teacher of witches and psychic power.

Happy you started up a book thread again.

My husband and I have been listening to a David Sedaris book on CD before we go to bed, read by him. It's nice to go to sleep laughing. :)

As for "real" books, I've been a little boring in that area lately- reading nonfiction about holistic pet care, since I'm obsessed with nursing a cat who adopted us back to health.

I have been reading books by Alice Miller, "Freedom From Lies" and "The Body Never Lies". These have helped me immensely to face issues related to my parents and how to deal with them. Has anyone else had experiences with her books?

I'm reading "Black Elk - The Sacred Ways of a Lakota" by Wallace Black Elk and William S. Lyon - I'm really loving it. It's rare to find such good strong wisdom and no agenda, to me. ;)

Madame S.

yes, i've read her books. i found them really helpful to a point. once i took good care of myself and wasn't angry anymore, i found that compassion took over and her books were then harder to relate to. but they have their place, especially for people who can't get to the place of compassion or forgiveness because they aren't safe and haven't been able to secure a safe place yet- physically or emotionally. i feel very fortunate that in my case, reconciliation was an option much later in life, but I'm aware that that's not possible for everyone.

Wanted to say that I'm really enjoying my two latest library books, The Revolution Will Not Be Microwaved, by Sandor Katz, and Herbs for Pets. Are you reading anything good right now?

I can't believe I'm still slogging my way through Gabaldon's series! But soon, I shall be reading the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier.

I'm reading way too many books at once right now, but they're all very good.

Goddess Initiation: A Practical Celtic Program for Soul-Healing, Self-Fulfillment & Wild Wisdom by Francesca De Grandis
Hell's Highway: A Chronicle of the 101st Airborne in the Holland Campaign, September-November 1944 by George Koskimaki
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
With the Old Breed by Eugene B. Sledge

I'm reading Juliet Marillier's wonderful fantasies. I finished the Sevenwaters Trilogy, and am now reading the Bridei trilogy. And reading many books at once, so also have some Alcott going, and Tasha Tudor bios.

This is off the wall, but a neighbor was telling me about a woman who grew up in a close by very wealthy suburb, who murdered one person and shot 5 others, all at the same time. I found a book about her, and it's very interesting. She was very OCD (in an extreme way) growing up. It's also interesting since it's local places for me, and wild to think about what goes on in these super posh "perfect" looking mansions around here, that yes, sometimes I am jealous of.

i've been in a fiction mood lately, so i went back to a few favorite authors from my adolescence:

a knot in the grain and other tales, by robin mckinley
dragonhaven, by robin mckinley
catherine, called birdy by karen cushman
the midwife's apprentice, by karen cushman
chalice, by robin mckinley

on a more serious/adult note, i'm reading dropped threads (vol 2) by a number of women authors
