Chinese medicine chat Thursday?

Postby cory su » Sun Feb 05, 2006 10:54 am

Hey all...

I am wondering if people would be interested to have a chat sometime Thursday about the Chinese medicine nomenclature I use. I know that I confuse people. So I feel maybe I can clarify some things easiest in my live chat room.

If you are interested, post here with a time frame that works for you. I will check back to see if anyone is interested. probably sometime 3-6 EST is best for me.

Hi Cory :D I would love to have a chat about Chinese medicine in general, actually, if that's alright. I am particularly interested in acupuncture as well as the utilisation of products other than those made from animal parts.

Do you speak a Chinese language, by any chance?

What I am wanting to do is offer opportunity for people to ask questions about differential diagnosis and terminolgy. I have posted a lot of herb monographs here recently and they are writen with emphasis on Chinese theory. I always have my phorum available for general questions & discussion about Chinese med: http://www.chinesetherapeutics.org/phorum/index.php

Acupuncture as a broad topic is not one I am interested to devote a chat to at this time. Meridians, Channels & points, okay that is fine to me.

As to product utilzation.. here is one to get you started: http://www.chinesetherapeutics.org/moxademo.html

As far as using products though.. I am really more interested in talking about herbs in our environment that are Asian in orgin.. how to make them into remedies as apposed to purchasing product. Also I am interested to talk about understanding non-asian herbs according to Chinese medicine theory.

I have studied Chinese as a research langauge, but my spoken Chinese is limited mostly to greetings, herb names, asking if people are busy, being able to say 'thank you' properly (as apposed to diarrhea ).

I'd be interested in that, as well the general discussion about terminology and differential diagnosis.

4.30 or 5pm EST is ok with me (3pm is a bit early in the morning here), however I have to say it will depend entirely on how my energy is on the day ie I'm pretty unreliable at the moment, so if I'm the only person interested at that time it's ok with me if you want to do something different.

Are you envisioning people talking about specific problems they have and discussing that within TCM theory?

(I'm curious about the Lithium/depression thing and more on how that would been seen from a Chinese medicine perspective, but will reply to your post in that thread when I'm more focussed).
It's all good (except for the crappy bits).

My apologies, I should have been clearer. The only reason I cited generally is because you did not make any dileanation between traditional and modern practices. I didn't mean to imply that I wanted to discuss the length and breadth of the topic, particularly as the subject of nomenclature is very wide in of itself.

My interest in acupuncture is relegated to the discipline of acupuncture as opposed to the science or therapy, particularly in combination with moxibustion which, as it would appear from the link you provided, has more than one meaning which intrigues me. If you don't wish to discuss this, though, that's fine. I was just clarifying myself.

However, I am most intrigued by your use of herbs in what I assume to be Traditional Chinese Medicine as my understanding is that China frowns on the its association in the Western context as the two are quite different (legally and pharmaceutically) so I am intrigued once again!

If I can, I'll try and get a look on your chat.

:D

I wasn't thinking of necessarily specific problems, except in relation to understanding diagnosis. Mainly I just want to give people a chance for clarification of about when to use certain herbs that I am posting about. If you will read the walnut thread in the foods section I think you will understand. Or in terms of differential diagnosis, if you go to the moontime section you will see I gave two different sets of advice for the same problem in different background .. lack of menstruation.

As to the Lithium/Depression issue, I'm not sure I can give you a good idea about Chinese med. perspective for that one. I will think about it.

I frown on American & Chinese American TCM practitioners who do not continue to evolve the medicine within their own home land. I am not realy a "Traditional" Chinese Medicine person. You will have an idea what I mean if you have a look at Susun Weed's Shamanic Healers Association guidelines which I have modified for Chinese medicine practice:

I just read your Shamanic TCM guidelines- thank you! That is exactly the direction I am coming from, and very helpfully clarifies where I want to go with my studies of TCM. I have studied local herbs here in the Bay Area for six years and my hope is to incorporate that knowledge into TCM herb theory. I would love to teach patients how to recognize their medicines in the land around them.

Anyway- I will try to stop in the chat, as I'd love to hear more from your perspective.

If you are in the minority of people who have trouble staying in the chat d/t browser issues, then go back log in again and choose the non-streaming firewall settings.

TCM chat

Postby Artemisia » Sun Feb 12, 2006 10:13 am

Hi all,

I haven't visited this board in ages, as life has gotten away on me. Now I'm really excited to see this topic discussed. Does this forum tend to support larger, formally-scheduled chats, or are they more often one-offs? An ongoing series of chats on this topic (and others!) would be great. It is much easier for me to make it into a regularly scheduled chat than sporadic ones, as I can put it down in my dayplanner and make time for it. Any thoughts? Cory Su, is a regular chat something you'd be willing to take part in?

Cheers, Rachel

Hi Rachel...

Nice to see you again.

I am not sure about the weedforum chats. I have never been able to get into them. I have a chat program up on my server now. I would be interested to do a monthly chat on a fixed day/time about chinese med if people are interested. The link to my chat is here:
http://www.chinesetherapeutics.org/chat ... ge=english

I need to get an idea about how many people are interested and what days work best.

Cory

Hi Cory,

I would definitely be interested in a monthly chat. Weekdays work best for me-- but not evenings, as I have small kids at home. Alternately, a weekend morning could work out well. This would be a fantastic addition to the East West herb course which I'm currently working on!

Cheers, Rachel
