Solomons Seal & Tendonitis, Bursitis, Sciatica

Postby Judy L » Sun Aug 29, 2004 7:51 pm

Hi all,

I wanted to share how remarkable my experience has been with this herb.

I recently got diagnosed with bursitis, tendonitis and sciatic nerve problems in my hip, knee and leg. Pain in the joints, leg weakness, on and on. So, last night I massaged some solomons seal oil into my hip, glut, and leg. I also took 1 drop of solomons seal tincture as well. When I woke up this morning I had no pain for the first time in a month. I could walk up stairs without my leg giving out. No joint pain. I feel so much better.

I read about this herb in Matthew Woods book THE BOOK OF HERBAL WISDOM.
I was unable to find the herb or oil on the west coast so I ordered it from Avena Botanicals in Maine.

Thought I'd share the blessings,
Judy

Judy, what part of the plant is being used?

It's funny, what I retained from going through Matthew's book was using Solomon's Seal Flower Essence to help direct us to our life's work. I had gotten the flower essence from Woodland Essences in my attempt to own them all, and it came without any explanation of what it was FOR.

Judy,

That sounds great! I've read a little about SS being used to help with Fibro, don't remember where (maybe here [:)]).

I'm interested also in knowing what part of the plant is used for the oil and tincture. It grows up here and I might could make some this fall if it's not too late.

Thank you for sharing and blessings,
GrannySam

Hi,

The root!! The tincture tastes good, mmmm.

Matthew Wood uses the fresh root for the tincture. He suggests using vodka because the tincture will get syrupy if brandy is used. (Sounds like I know him, huh)

Avena uses fresh root for the tincture and the oil ? I never asked.

Lady B, I don't remember reading anything about the flower essence. I'll have to look again.

Blessings,
Judy

Well this is a timely bit of information! Perhaps this will be the solution to my husband's tendonitis he has had for months. Doctor is threatening cortisone injections, which 'we' do not want, obviously. I shall see if I can get it here.[:)]

***Bump***

Once again I find this stuff amazing. I had been diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff and tendonitis in my right shoulder. This resulted in pain(ouch), weakness in arm, numbness in my right thumb and muscle aches in the arm and shoulder.

I used the SS oil externally on the shoulder and thumb. I also used SJW oil externally on the thumb. W/i minutes the feeling came back in my thumb. By morning I was in considerably less pain and my arm was not as weak. I wish I would have thought to use this stuff a lot sooner.

It is a strange sensation. I can feel the tendons adjusting in my shoulder when I use this.

Thanks for that info. I made some oil and some tincture last year, but had forgotten what they were good for! I think its just what my poor sore hands need :)
You have to be careful when you harvest the roots - they grow just one little nodule a year, and each new nodule grows a shoot. I heard you should only harvest up to the second last nodule with shoots, if that makes sense.

Actually ONLY the END nodule makes the next year's shoot, so you CAN take up to, say, two sections from the growing tip. But of course wildcrafting ethics says to take no more than 10% of any given stand. The TIME to harvest is in the fall, once the leaves have turned yellow, signaling that the energy has gone down into the root. Although the variegated one has IMPRESSIVE roots, it just FEELS like it has virtually NO medicinal qualities. I thought we had another thread about this, I'll 'dig' around.... :D
